History: Link here!
Appearance: [1, 2, 3!] Onoda is a short, squirrely, doe-eyed high school freshman with blue eyes and white skin. He is a native of Chiba, Japan. He is narrow-chested with an overall small frame, though his body is otherwise proportionate. His black hair is cut short (and messily) to his scalp, giving him a constant helmet-haired look (which he had even before he started biking). His glasses are even larger than his eyes. He is canonically 5'5" and 119 pounds.
Personality: Yowamushi Pedal details the journey from a timid, awkward, and lonely freshman to a friendly, hardworking individual and successful athlete. In the beginning of the series, Onoda's obsession with anime and anxiety over being ousted by his peers ultimately keep him from making friends with anyone his own age. His crippling shyness often leads him to escaping unpleasant situations at the first sign of trouble. As the series moves forward and Onoda gains more confidence in himself and the support of his friends, he slowly learns to navigate his anxiety and become a friendlier person. However, Onoda's lonely past still had a profound affect on his core personality:
Onoda is small, timid, eager to please, over-apologetic, and often speaks without filtering his words. With an animated magical girl as his idol, Onoda is also optimistic, friendly, and incredibly polite. Unfortunately, because of his timidity, he will often stammer or apologize or over-thank those he does not know well or mesh with easily. Onoda will soon become comfortable around and fiercely loyal to those he considers his friends.
When he talks about anime, Onoda becomes excitable, energetic, talkative, and passionate. He usually falls into fits of comedic bliss over finding a companion to discuss anime with. Onoda does not display the same sort of fanaticism over biking, but his fascination and determination when riding for the Sohoku Bicycle Club is unparalleled. (At one point, Onoda even remarks to his own shock and horror that while he was watching a new episode of his favorite anime Love Hime, he began thinking about bicycle training.) When Tooji Kanzaki, the previous captain of the Sohoku Bicycling Club, offers Onoda a manual on bicycling, Onoda devours the book immediately. When Kinjou asks Naruko to volunteer for a magazine interview, Onoda recognizes it as a high-end bicycling magazine. While having no previous knowledge of biking before joining Sohoku, Onoda's determination and thirst for knowledge about bicycling is emphasized. Most significant is how quickly Onoda learns difficult biking maneuvers, impressing even the most experienced of bicyclists in the club. When Miki Kanzaki raises the saddle of his bicycle so his feet hardly touch the ground, Miki and Onoda remark on the incredible and immediate progress he makes while biking. when he rides his utility bike on a set of rollers, Onoda's teammates mention how riding on rollers would take cyclists months to learn how to use properly. When he is given a road racer to replace his utility bike, Onoda demonstrates incredible willpower and skill over a bicycle he's never used beforehand. With each accumulation of those skills, Onoda becomes excited about bicycling, and finds his new discoveries fun and exhilarating.
Onoda's thoughts don't run very deep; he is even mentioned by his peers to be very simple-minded in his thinking. His mind runs on one track a majority of the time, making conscious multitasking difficult for him. (An example of it being unconscious is when he sings the Love Hime theme as he bikes, which somehow prompts his cadence to excel.) However, when given a task by comrades, Onoda is learning to fulfill his duty no matter the cost or backlash. In the first and second days of the Inter-High, Onoda is given direct orders from Captain Kinjou Shingo, which Onoda completes with vigor and to the point of collapse. Whether or not he can truly complete that task may be out of his hands, but his extreme determination pushes him to succeed.
At times, Onoda may delve into self-doubt—and when he does so, it's difficult for him to snap out of it on his own. In his first race against Imaizumi, as soon as Imaizumi passed him, Onoda stepped off of his bike and concluded that he would not win the race. With help from Miki Kanzaki, Onoda continues and convinces himself that he must win the race, no matter the cost. While Onoda did not achieve his goal, he was also not greatly affected by his loss. Instead, in his newfound respect for and friendship with Imaizumi, Onoda became a happier individual. Several times during the Inter-High, Onoda is struck by sudden self-doubt and nervousness, often while encountering intimidating members of other teams. At some points, Onoda even overexerts himself to the point of exhaustion; Onoda nearly relents to dropping out of the race, only to be saved by letting Imaizumi carry him for a small duration during the Inter-High to regain his strength. Oftentimes Onoda is able to break free of his self-doubt with the help of his teammates and friends; at other times, Onoda finds enough willpower to motivate himself to win the competition.
A core trait of Onoda's personality is his desire to connect with others, whether or not he acts on those wishes. In the welcoming race with Imaizumi and Naruko, Onoda finds motivation to keep riding in order to "catch up" to his friends, which he repeats to himself as a mantra throughout the race. (This is in direct contrast to the wishes of Naruko and Imaizumi, both of which seek singularity as "the best" in their respective fields as sprinter and all-rounder.) In his first race with Imaizumi, Onoda admits that he only wishes for Imaizumi to join his pursuit to revive the anime club—because he does not have a single friend. When he is given his first road racer near the beginning of the welcoming race, Onoda believes that his bicycle "will help him make friends;" this provides him with motivation to continue riding and pedaling as fast as he can, even while trudging through last place.
Onoda aims to win his races, though not for fame or a highly competitive spirit. Instead, Onoda finds pure joy in racing itself, which is noted even by the coach of the Sohoku cycling team. Onoda wins the 41st Inter-High not for his own benefit or to overcome any personal issue; Manami and Midousuji, who placed just behind Onoda, have their own personal stakes in winning the Inter-High, contrasting Onoda's selfless determination to win the competition for his friends. (Manami is arguably more connected to his team than Midousuji is to his own, and part of his motivation also lies with winning the competition for Hakonegaku, but he also cycles and races for his own benefit of feeling more "alive" when riding on hills.) After Onoda's win, he humbly accepts the fame that comes with winning the bicycling competition, though he attributes his win to the support of his teammates.
Overall, Onoda seeks to learn, build connections, and make racing as fun for himself and his friends as possible. He looks more towards becoming part of a group of friends, almost as a family unit, and giving them as much support as they return to him.
Abilities: He is an average human, aside from his uncanny biking abilities! His cadence when cycling, which refers to the rate at which he turns his pedals, is highly remarked upon by his peers in the bicycling club. Onoda is a "climber," or climbing specialist, in bicycling terms, meaning that he can ride exceptionally well on inclines such as mountains or hills. He is also a fast learner and has great balance over his bike, despite his otherwise clumsy nature.
Aside from that, he knows random trivia about plenty of anime (encompassing japanimation and other animated TV shows) and can sing every song from the Love Hime soundtrack.

Onoda has considered once or twice in the past that he should dial it back, maybe just a bit. The reasons to do so seemed logical: his room at home had become a canyon, with ribbons of carpet running under pillared stacks of DVDs and comic books. There were already shelves and tops of dressers that were dedicated to his figurines, which were beginning to nearly spill over the edge. (He couldn't decide which ones to keep and which ones to stow away! Some figurines could be displayed by themselves and others had to come in a set, or else they wouldn't look right. It was a delicate and complicated art.) His bedroom walls had meshed into a giant mosaic of tape and cheap posters. (Also a delicate and complicated art.)
Maybe, he considers maybe once or twice in his lifetime, he should dial it back some, for the sake of space and money. He's given an allowance by his parents for all the chores he performs for them; he's happy to run errands in town so long as it means he's able to pay for capsules and Blu-Rays. For as much merchandise as he buys, Onoda is generally smart about savings. Every penny is worth it. Considering his much-needed presence on the Sohoku bicycling team, Onoda's attention had also been forced away from his beloved pre-orders and capsules more than ever before. His time with the team acts as a prime distraction from the gaps in his collection. But Holly Heights is different.
Onoda is sharing his room again. Once before, he was able to divide his room between himself and Tamaki Suoh, his previous "brother," but in his mind's eye, that had been many months ago. This is why, with Onoda pushing a 5"x7" figurine on the cashier's desk at Holly Heights' anime store, he is considering dialing it back for the first time in months. Possibly a year. He says this as he already carries two plastic bags in each hand, one filled with a stack of manga and the other bulging with capsules. Maybe he should reconsider, he thinks, slinging the plastic bag over the inner crook of his elbow and handing his bills over to the cashier.
But can he be blamed? The Holly Heights anime store has series he's never even heard of. There were many things he missed about the place, but this store seemed like a treasure meant just for him.
"Thank you very much!" Onoda beams as he takes the plastic bag offered to him, his figurine slipped inside. He gives a small bow of his head before turning, his bags hitting against his knees and thighs, before escorting himself through the double doors. Should he really be riding his bike with these things hanging off of the handlebars? It might look dangerous to anyone else, but to Onoda Sakamichi, carrying merchandise on his handlebars was old-hat. By now, any thought of dialing back his obsession was long gone. If anyone was going to stop the poor boy from putting himself in harm's way, they'd best act quickly; he's already flipping the kickstand from his bike and hooking his leg over the seat.
